Picture and controls
Getting the picture out, and the controller in.
Storage decides how fast a game loads. This decides how it looks and how it feels. Both sides are full of options that read as equivalent on a shop listing and are not — an eight-pound HDMI dongle and a thirty-five-pound one differ by about two hundred milliseconds.

Analog paths add no latency because nothing processes the signal. Everything digital adds whatever its converter costs.

The cheap HDMI dongle trap
The small dongles sold as “PS2 to HDMI” plug into the same AV Multi port as a component cable, which makes them look equivalent. Most are not: they take the composite signal, not the component one. You get composite quality delivered over an HDMI cable, and because they buffer a whole frame to upscale it, somewhere between 30 and 200 ms of added latency on top. Listings almost never say which input they use. If it costs under about ten pounds and needs no separate component cable, assume composite.
Most of the lag is usually the television
A good adapter adds under a millisecond, but a modern TV can add far more on its own while it processes the picture. Turn on Game Mode if your set has it — Electron Shepherd put the typical saving at 50 to 100 ms, which dwarfs anything the cable or adapter contributes. The BlueRetro latency-testing guide makes the same point about controllers: chasing input lag before checking your display is “completely backwards”.
Cable quality is not marketing
Component keeps brightness and colour on separate wires, and that separation is what makes it sharp — but only if the cable is shielded well enough to preserve it. Cheap generic component cables are a common source of visible noise and ghosting, and swapping to an official Sony or a properly-made third-party cable is a real, visible improvement rather than an audiophile one. It is the one place on this page where spending more on a cable is genuinely justified.
About 480p
Component is the only PS2 output that carries progressive scan, but that does not mean you get it. Most games render 480i regardless, and progressive support was always a per-title decision. GSM — the Graphics Synthesizer Mode Selector, which works alongside Open PS2 Loader — can force 480p by intercepting the output before it reaches the AV connector. In OPL it lives under Game Settings, reached by pressing Triangle on a game.
It is not a free win. Many games render internally at 512×448 and will not fill the screen in progressive mode, and some show graphical glitches, broken effects or performance problems because they were built around interlaced rendering. Try it per game and keep it where it helps.
Component (YPbPr)

The best signal the PS2 can produce, and the only one that carries 480p progressive scan. Sold separately — no console shipped with these.

Pure analog. Nothing between the console and the display, so nothing to add delay.
Signal
Clean, but only as clean as the cable. Brightness and colour travel on separate wires, which is what makes it sharp — poor shielding undoes that with ghosting and noise.

RGB SCART
The European equivalent of component for picture quality, and the native choice in PAL regions. Sharp, and the standard input for most retro upscalers.

Excellent when the cable is properly shielded and wired. SCART's weakness is connector quality, not the format.

Component-to-HDMI adapter
ElectronPulse and similar
Takes the console's component output and converts it to HDMI without buffering a frame first. The practical answer for a modern television with no analog inputs at all.
Added latency

Under a millisecond on a well-designed unit, because the conversion is a direct analog-to-digital path with no framebuffer. That design choice is the whole story.
Signal
Digital output, so the cable run adds nothing at all once converted.

A real step up from composite for very little money, if your display has the socket. Separates luma from chroma, which removes the worst of composite's smearing.

Better than composite because brightness and colour are separated, so the colour bleed composite suffers from largely disappears.

Composite

What came in the box. Every console supports it, and it is the worst picture the PS2 can produce.

Everything shares one wire, so colour bleeds into brightness and the picture is soft with visible fringing. This is the format's ceiling, not a cable problem.

Cheap HDMI dongle
The small plastic dongles sold as PS2-to-HDMI. Despite plugging into the AV Multi port, most take the composite signal rather than the component one — so you get composite quality delivered over HDMI, plus a framebuffer's worth of delay.

30–200 ms
Typically 30 to 200 ms, because these buffer a whole frame to upscale it. Anything with timing — rhythm games, fighters, anything with a parry — becomes unplayable.
Signal
The output is digital and therefore clean, but it is a clean copy of a composite signal. Converting badly and then transmitting perfectly does not help.

Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are not interchangeable
BlueRetro is a Bluetooth adapter. It pairs with PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S, Switch, Wii and generic HID Bluetooth pads — but it cannot talk to a controller that uses its own proprietary 2.4 GHz dongle, which is a different radio protocol entirely. If your pad came with a USB receiver in the box, that receiver is the only thing it speaks to. Check which your controller uses before buying anything.
Wired DualShock 2
The controller the console was designed around, with pressure-sensitive face buttons that a surprising number of wireless alternatives do not reproduce properly.

The reference everything else is measured against. Nothing in the path but wire.
Signal
No radio, nothing to interfere with. It either works or the cable is broken.
Pros

BlueRetro
An open-source ESP32-based Bluetooth adapter covering a long list of retro consoles, PS2 among them. Four or more players from a single adapter, using controllers you probably already own.
Added latency
< 6 ms
Advertised as under 6 ms with PS4 and PS5 pads — but that figure comes from sellers of assembled units, not from the project, which publishes no number. It ships a latency-test profile and links a testing method instead, so treat this as a claim rather than a measurement.
Signal
Bluetooth, so it shares 2.4 GHz with everything else in the room. Solid in practice, with the usual caveat about congested environments.

Official and quality 2.4 GHz
Sony and reputable third-party receivers
Controllers that ship with their own matched receiver. Simple, and generally reliable, though you are locked to whichever pad came with the dongle.

Rarely measured or published. Reputable 2.4 GHz receivers are generally responsive; the figures simply are not documented the way BlueRetro's are.
Signal
A dedicated 2.4 GHz link to its own dongle, so pairing is simple, but it still shares the band with Wi-Fi and everything else.

Generic wireless adapters
The unbranded adapters that flood marketplace listings. Some are decent, many are not, and identical-looking units behave differently.

Unpublished and inconsistent. Some are fine; some add enough delay to be obvious, and nothing on the listing tells you which you are buying.
Signal
Cheap radios and poor antennas mean dropouts, especially with the receiver behind the console.

VerdictA gamble. BlueRetro costs more and removes the uncertainty entirely.
On these numbers
Latency figures come from manufacturers and sellers rather than independent measurement. The HDMI comparison draws on a vendor's testing of its own competitors, and BlueRetro's figure comes from reseller listings rather than the project itself — both worth knowing when reading them. Analog paths are listed as zero because there is genuinely nothing in the signal path to add delay, not because anyone measured them. Where a figure is not published, this page says so rather than guessing.
Picture quality and signal ratings are judgements, not measurements, in the same way as the reliability scores on the hardware page.
